An international arrest warrant has been issued for former Australia rugby captain Rocky Elsom, after a French court sentenced him to five years in prison for misusing corporate assets. The charges stem from Elsom’s tenure as president of French rugby club Narbonne between 2015 and 2016, according to lawyer Patrick Tabet, who shared details of the case with AFP.
Elsom, who earned 75 caps for the Wallabies, was also found guilty of forgery and ordered to repay €705,000 (approximately A$1.1 million). The court found that Elsom had made an unjustifiable payment of €79,000 to a former coach and had hired an individual in Australia for €7,200 per month, despite the person never working for the club or traveling to Narbonne.
The court’s president imposed a stricter sentence than the two-year prison term requested by the prosecutor. Narbonne, once champions of France in 1936 and 1979, faced liquidation and were relegated in 2018 after enduring prolonged financial difficulties.
