Om Prakash Rawat was born on 2 December 1953. He completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Physics from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi. Furthering his education, he obtained a Master’s degree in Social Development Planning from the United Kingdom.

Rawat joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1977 under the Madhya Pradesh cadre.
