John Jay was born on 12 December 1745 in New York City.

He was the son of Peter Jay who was a wealthy merchant of Huguenot descent. and her mother Mary Van Cortlandt from a prominent and notable political family of New York.

Jay grew up in an affluent and intellectual environment. John Jay studied at King’s College (now Columbia University) where he got in law and political philosophy degree.

Career:

John Jay’s career started as a lawyer in colonial New York  but he rose to prominence during the American Revolutionary War.
